Imprisoned! But Not Alone

Chuck Colson, founder of Prison Fellowship, died last month.  I am sure you heard about it in the news.  If you are too young to remember the days of Richard Nixon and Watergate, you certainly heard about them now, as the reporters reviewed Colson’s life, his sins and his successes.

Colson made a commitment to follow Jesus Christ before he went to prison for obstruction of justice.   In fact, it was his commitment to Christ that convinced Colson to admit his failure and plead guilty, knowing he would be sentenced to prison, and probably never practice his profession of law again.

He had many supporting Christian friends around him while he pondered this decision.  But once in the slammer he would be be alone.  Or would he? Continue reading

When Reality Hits

As parents we are constantly trying to protect our children. We baby-proof our homes for our infants and toddlers. We teach our little ones to look both ways before crossing the road, and to never talk to strangers. We tell our teens to stay clear of the wrong crowd and to be careful of internet predators. We know it is our job to protect our children…

But what do we do when reality hits?

How do we protect our children from the struggles we face? Trouble in our marriages, losing a job or a home. What do we do then?

Do we tell them the realities of our lives or do we continue to protect them at all costs? I can only tell you that those decisions come with age. For young children it is imperative they we shelter them. They need to feel safe and secure at all times. Our struggles can not be their struggles. But as children get older they sense so much more than we think.

They see and hear things. They know the fight is happening, they see mom or dad home when they should be at work, and they see the worry on our faces when the bills pile up. Children’s imaginations can run wild with very little knowledge. They can make problems bigger than they are. My child even developed panic attacks during a difficult period in our family’s life. He sensed something seriously wrong in our family and didn’t know what to do with his fear. Once he knew a part of what was happening the panic attacks subsided and he was able to cope.

I learned from that experience that children deserve answers. They are members of our families and with that comes inclusion. That does not  mean you should tell them all the details of your struggles, but you should trust them and God enough to share with them part of your family’s realities.

Tell them that even though things are a little rough right now you trust in God to carry your family through. First and foremost go to His word. In John 16:33 we are told,”I have told you these things, so that you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” God is telling us to be strong and have faith in his almighty power.  We are told  in Psalm 68:19,  ”Praise be to the LORD, to God our Savior who daily bears our burdens.” In this passage we are told He is carrying us and He is with us always. So trust in your family to gain strength and faith from the burdens and know God will get us through. Protect your children but teach them at the same time.

Far Beyond All That We Ask or Think

I referred to a Scripture passage in last Sunday’s message from Acts 3-4 entitled “Exceeding Expectations.”  The passage is Ephesians 3:20-21: “Now to him who by the power that is working within us is able to do far beyond all that we ask or think, to him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever, Amen.”  Often when we come to God in prayer, we pray according to what we can imagine happening.  Sometimes we even have a hard time praying to that level if we feel like praying has not achieved the result WE WANTED.  I would like to exhort you this week to Continue reading

Paul Baloche Rocks Powerhouse!

Last week, Powerhouse was blessed to host the guys from New Canaan Society as they welcomed Paul Baloche to their Friday morning breakfast. With over 250 men coming out at 6:30 a.m. last Friday morning, Paul and his band led the guys in worship and shared some of his personal testimony. Continue reading

He Calls Us By Name

In the waters of  Long Island Sound, not far from City Island, lies the largest public cemetery in the country.  Few visitors are allowed to go there, but on a recent blue-skied morning, my husband Tom and I boarded a small ferry to Hart Island, the potter’s field for the poor and unclaimed of New York City.  Narrow and only one mile long, Hart Island holds almost one million graves.  City prisoners provide the labor for the burials. No one lives there, and abandoned houses are hidden by overgrowth.

To VBS or Not to VBS?

I know a lot of you grew up going to summer Vacation Bible School, or as it is called these days VBS. Whenever I bring up the subject with people, their faces light up and you catch a glimpse of the child they used to be…

The memories begin flowing from their mouths. They remember the Bible stories, the games they played and the friends they made, and they usually begin singing one of the worship songs that is ingrained in their souls.

VBS is another tool we can use to bring the love of the Lord to a child. This year we chose the theme, “Sky” by Group. The message of “Sky” is,  “No matter what, trust God!”
I find it so ironic that the message of “Sky” is trust. One, because my blog was entitled that last week and two because I want to trust in God, but I have a tendency to worry all the time! UGH!

As we began to plan the VBS the concerns began to mount. First, two other churches in the area are doing the same VBS, so I worried would our VBS be as good as theirs. Second, would we get enough volunteers to handle all the kids we hope to have. On both counts I let myself get sick over it. But as I began to go through the daily lessons and read the Bible stories in “Sky” and see how the message would be translated to the children, I realized God was speaking directly to me. TRUST ME!

I have decided to lay Powerhouse’s VBS at the Lord’s feet. I am giving it all to God. He is my Station Leader for recruitment and I am His assistant. My job is to pray everyday and to trust in God to make our VBS all He wants it to be.

My VBS has already begun, God is already reaching out to me and inviting me to believe and trust in Him, no matter what. Now we are inviting you.

We at Powerhouse invite you to come volunteer–work on our decorating committee, be a leader to the children, serve the children snacks,  or just pray for us. Whatever you can do, I trust it will be great! Powerhouse’s VBS is August 13th to 17th, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., children are invited to come from 3 years old to 6th grade.

Is Prophecy for Today?

Throughout the history of the Christian church people have often landed on one side or another when it comes to their view on prophecy.  For some, prophecy is no longer needed or valid.  Their reasoning comes primarily from 1 Corinthians 13:8 -13, where Paul the Apostle writes… Continue reading
