Thirsty?

The mayor of New York City started a national debate this month by proposing a ban on large size sugary drinks.  Soon to be outlawed are “Big Gulp” and “Super Size” sodas.  You will no longer be able to buy a serving over 16 ounces at restaurants in the city.

Now I’m not a soda fan – but I do like my sweet tea -  and on a hot, sweaty, summer day a 16 ounce serving seems paltry.   It appears amid all the talk of sugar, calories and body fat, the reason we drink gets lost………  We’re thirsty and we need a satisfying drink.

Did you know Jesus offered free drinks one day in the Temple courtyard……

On the last day of the feast, the greatest day, Jesus stood up and shouted out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me, and let the one who believes in Me drink.”  (John 7:37)

What kind of drink, and what kind of thirst was He talking about?   Surely many in the crowd knew Jesus had astonishingly provided 180 gallons of wine at a wedding in Cana where no one left thirsty.  But the thousands that packed the Temple grounds that day had come to quench a different thirst, a thirst of the heart.

As bodies are made to take in water, so hearts are made to daily drink the love, grace and mercies of God.  Wander away from your water source and you soon dry up.

Jesus called, and still calls, to all the thirsty, hungry, guilty, sick, lost and weary to come to Him.

“I have come so that they may have life and have it in abundance,” Jesus said.  (John 10:10)

You never need to worry that He will start to limit the size of your drinks, or send you away thirsty.  Just as Jesus provided more than enough wine at the wedding, He provides more than enough of what we need every day:  love, acceptance, forgiveness, healing, peace and rest.

“My people shall be satisfied with my goodness,”  declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 31:14)

I believe that God’s goodness is always Super-Sized!
