Do you remember a few years ago there was a popular poster, that read something like…
In a thousand years from now, no one will remember the car I drove or the house I owned, but rather that I influenced the life of a child.
I know this seems pretty cheesy, but it has stuck with me for all these years.
Now let’s take that saying and apply it to today’s children.
If you ask a parent what makes up self esteem in a child, you might get answers such as doing well in sports, or in dance, or in academics, or socially. However, self esteem begins with being acknowledged and valued first and foremost for the person they are, the person God created, just as they are.
We as a Christian community need to help our children value themselves for who they are, we need to give them the tools to build their self esteem, their self value.
In a thousand years from now do we want our children to be remembered for the amount of home runs they had, or the dance competitions they won, or the car they drove or rather for the life they lead as followers of Christ. We need the tools to help them achieve this self esteem so they can be a positive Christian influence for all they meet.
This Sunday, Pastor Jeff gave us some of those tools to help raise our children as God intended, not as society tells us. We need to involve our children, help them feel they are a vital part of their family and community. We need to give them competence. Does your child know how to make their bed, clean off the table after dinner, does your teenager have a job, do they have responsibilities away from school? Finally, does your child know they matter, that they are valued and loved, because they are a child of God? How precious they are to us all, do we really show them this?
