Small groups can change the world.  A small group met in Philadelphia 236 years ago. The outcome?  On July 4,1776, delegates from thirteen colonies pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to the creation of the United States of America. The world changed.

Jesus invested more than two years in a small group of twelve men.  On the night before he died, the group was down to eleven.  Before dawn it was only two.  Then only John remained.  But two days later when the men regrouped to hide and grieve, Jesus appeared to them alive.  Seven weeks later they rocked Jerusalem with this good news.  The world changed.

How was it that these small groups of men, apparently powerless against great empires  – Great Britain and Rome – changed the world?

There is something at work in this world that is more powerful than earthly thrones and armies, and that is truth.   “We hold these truths…,” the Philadelphia delegates declared.

When Peter stood up in Jerusalem on Pentecost, he declared undeniable truth: “God has resurrected this Jesus. We are all witnesses of this.” (Acts 2:32)

When Jesus stood bound and beaten before Pilate, who had the supposedly unsurpassed power of Rome behind him, Jesus told Pilate, “Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.”  Pilate walked away, but the Small Group who followed the Truth, Jesus, “turned the world upside down.”(Acts 17:6)

So after you  celebrate Independence Day with parades, parties and fireworks, take a few minutes to ask yourself this:   What truths do I hold?  To what truth would I give my life, fortune and honor?
