Where Thieves Break In

Last week my friends became the targets of thieves.  One friend heard a noise in her kitchen and found a thief straddling her window.  Another returned home in early afternoon to find her house totally ransacked.  The emotional jarring of these events is intense, and it underlines the uncertainty of life in this world…..like the  afternoon my teen son’s shiny red sports car vanished from the lot at the Garden State Plaza.

When Jesus taught, he was speaking to folks like us who knew a lot about thieves.  His parables contain thieves who come unexpectedly and owners who attempt to hide their treasures from them.  There was even a thief among Jesus’ closest friends (John 12:6.)

Jesus contrasted these villains and their deeds to himself and to real lasting treasures.  “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”  (John 10:10)   “Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.” (Luke 12:33)

Would you like moneybags that don’t leak, treasures that don’t fail, and a close relationship with the Giver of Life in abundance?

Our mission at Powerhouse Christian Church, Wyckoff, is that you obtain
these riches by becoming a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.  We have Small Groups that meet during the week in northern New Jersey.  There we study the Bible, pray with you and share how God has provided for us.  To find a group, go to the Powerhouse home page, click on community and select small groups from the drop-down menu. On the Small Group page you will be able to click a link and browse our list of groups and contact information.

Even if it had not been stolen, one day that shiny car would have ended up in a scrap yard where we eventually found it.  Scrap yards have a way of making us think about what really lasts.
