That was the question I posed to our high schoolers this past week. Every week in our senior high group we take a portion of the night to worship God through singing but how many of us really know why we worship God? I found that most of the students had no idea what worship was and why we did it. So to wrap up our Rhythm series we took some time to look at the topic of worship and the role it should have in our lives…I believe that there are 3 main actions that should take place when we worship God whether it is through singing, or any other action these three things should occur in order to worship God and they are a recognition of the awesomeness of God, a reflection on what He has done for us, and a refocusing of our minds onto Him. Let me explain in a little more detail.
Recognition of the awesomeness of God – In the book of Revelation John writes about when he saw Jesus and recognized who He was he fell down on the ground as though dead. That’s intense isn’t it? John was so overwhelmed by the awesomeness of God that it caused him to literally fall down and worship. When was the last time you were so in awe of God that you couldn’t even stand up? When we worship Him we need to be sure we take the time to recognize that awesomeness and acknowledge that.
Reflect on what He has done for us – Paul says in 1 Timothy that he is forever grateful that Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of which he was the very worst. Paul takes the time in that passage to reflect on what Jesus did for him in his life and he worships Him because of what He did for him. As we worship God we must never lose sight of what Jesus did in coming to earth and dying for us so that we could spend eternity with Him.
Refocus our minds back to Him – In Hebrews it says that we need to fix our eyes on Jesus who is the author and perfecter of our faith. It is so easy to become pulled away from Jesus as we are faced with trials and temptations in our lives. As we worship God we must use the time to refocus our minds back to him so that we can fix our eyes on Jesus alone.
When we focus on these three components of worship I really believe that we will enter into a time of worship with the Lord that will transform the way that we experience Him. So when was the last time that you truly worshipped God?
